ABOUT THE WORKOUT

"The practice of writing is intricately connected to the art of noticing. What details, images, and background make up the totality of a painting? What details, images, and background make up the totality of the present? What can writing supplement that a visual may not? Ekphrastic poetry is the literary term for describing visual art, but it can also serve as a lyrical bridge between an artist and a viewer to connect the past and present—the finished creation and one’s own creativity. Using Jacob Lawrence’s “The Migration Series” paintings, participants will be able to connect the stories depicted in the visuals with their present day understanding of the world around us, generating new works in these two hours with an opportunity to read and share with their peers." —Artis Kian
