ABOUT THE WORKOUT

"As writers and readers, we often turn to writing and reading as nourishment. As poetry feeds us, I want to in turn ask, what feeds poetry? What are the ingredients that make a poem? Using the core concepts of salt, fat, acid, and heat from Samin Nosrat’s cookbook, we will learn about the ingredients and seasonings that go into a great poem. Through discussing contemporary food poems, writers will be investigating the amount of salt, the fat used to cook, which acidic elements add balance, and the type of heat that transforms. There will also be time for writers to cook up their own poems." —Karen Zheng
