A Multi-faceted Jewel of the Theater District

Designed by Morris Aubry Architects and named for philanthropist Gus S. Wortham, the Wortham Theater Center is home to the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet. Since opening in 1987, it has served as a central venue for Performing Arts Houston.

““I wanted to turn the escalator into a triumphant ceremonial passage”

-Albert Paley, sculptor

“[The Wortham] infuses hope, aspiration, and inspiration into the people of the city of Houston.”

– Mayor Sylvester Turner

A Symbol of Artistic Promise

The Wortham Theater Center was created as a statement of civic ambition and artistic promise. With capacity for approximately 2,400 in the larger Brown Theater and 1,100 in the Cullen Theater, every seat was designed with the audience experience in mind.
